Do you ever catch yourself doing The Scan? If you know, you know.
You arrive at a large professional event: say it’s a conference, an association gathering or a wider company event – full of strangers.
What’s the first thing you do?
I purposely search the crowd for someone who looks like me.
I call it “The Scan” – the quick assessment of visible diversity in the space.
If you are that “1 diverse person” in the team, I bet you’ve done it too.
It’s almost an instinctive action – the scan.
I was in university the first time I noticed it.
Now it is a conscious routine that I use in any group environment.
The action can take from a few seconds to minutes to do.
And it gives you an advantage of having a different perspective.
When was the last time you caught yourself doing the scan?
